PostSubject: Changing of the Guard   Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:48 am

Spoiler:

OOC: this is the general look/layout of the base

The outskirts of the town of Pietrasanta were a lovely blend of gentle hills and mountainous regions, an ancient city in Tuscany, it was the home the Pietrasanta Marina, one of the most beautiful stretches of beaches in the world. It was in the highlands of the just outside the city that the oldest secret base for the Stella Polare family was built, the Tuscano Vecchio, nestled at the top of a hill leading to the sea cliffs a mile away. Originally a summer villa for the early Stella Polare leaders, it was turned into an official base at some point in the previous decades under the 13th Boss. A simple mansion, it looked more like a family house than a military base; the Tuscano Vecchio split into numerous rooms and tunnels underground, used as a weapons testing facility and overall retreat for the members of the family to train themselves with as much anonymity as possible.

Takashi had been taken here early in his career when he would vacation here with the 13th boss and his entourage; the old mans frequent health problems meant that he would take numerous vacations to spend time in a stress-less environment for a few weeks. The feeling was much different now; they were running from the Teretti, wounded, broken and barely limping to the door. The villa was their only refuge now, with the Teretti slowly taking over Tuscany they were safer here than anywhere else.

"We cant contact anyone Boss. Nobody's on the lines, or the channels, it seems the Teretti did more than just attack Florence; We cant even contact the Sala di Polara"

The 5 remaining members of the Stella Polare had made it to the door of their last base, their minds elsewhere as they wondered if they were really the last members of the Family left, with nothing to go on but the hushed silence of their former channels and telephones, it was a hard pill to swallow. Sitting on the entrance way, they sat in silence as Takashi rang the doorbell 4 times, the password to enter the villa, eventually, he decided to speak.

"Nobody knows about the Tuscano Vecchio, the members we have here will be able to help us"

"Snazzy Place Here"

They had pulled up to the Tuscano Vecchio in a rental car, they had docked the speedboat in the Marina in the middle of the night, unnoticed by even the security cameras thank to a little ruse H.J. was able to pull off in a split second decision. The villa was a beautifully made building, as if it was painted the same color as the sunrise that was in front of it; if this was a summer home for the Stella Polare, he would like to see their real base. The entire place looked like a marvelous vacation spot; leading unsuspecting mafiaoso and public alike to disregard the place as simply a lovely bed and breakfast, all the while the Stella Polare were making weapons and devices for their soldiers underneath the pleasant tuscan villa.

Takashi rang the doorbell as the 5 of them waited patiently on the doorstep, H.J. seemed to take the news the softest. He never met any of these people, so he could not understand the emotional significance of having the entire family go off the grid all in one night. He figured that if they werent killed, they would go into hiding as well, just like Takashi had planned for them to do. He would look into checking the other bases with Bruno while the others rested, eventually the door was opened by a butler, leading them in.

"Bruno, can i talk to you for a second?"

"Oh, Jameson, thank you for answering, I need to find Z., is he working today?"

Jameson was the men in charge of defending the Tuscano Vecchio's non combative workers, and aside from a few other men, he was their only defense in charge of the villa. An older man in his early fifties, his hair was already beginning to turn gray, turning the edges and fringes of his hair a salt and pepper color as his body began to show the signs of age. An old friend of the 13th Boss, he was charged with defending on of the most clandestine of the Stella Polare's bases, back we he was still called Vanguard ; though it was clear he had not fought in a few years, he still remained a strong, dependable individual to lean on, especially in these trying circumstances.

"We had been worried about you, we thought you were killed when Florence fell"

Ushered the weakened, demoralized group from Florence, he lead them into the main hall just inside of the villa. The living room overlooked the plaza and the gardens below, and had more than enough room to allow each of the members to rest, relax, and likely get some sleep after their long night of escaping Florence. Bruno, H.J., Renato and the transporter, Toto, fell onto the catch and chairs that had made up the smaller dens of the main hall, all of them clearly exhausted from the fights the night before. Even as the sun had begun to rise, Takashi felt his body was still awake enough to continue on with what he needed to do. Now that they were safe in the presence of other family members, he could finally let himself unwind for a moment, until he was ushered away to the basement by Jameson.

"Z.'s here, he's been working for quite some time, after we heard about Florence, we called in every member of the family for an emergency meeting"

Getting into the elevator together, Takashi asked Jameson to continue his story "And? what happened?"

Jameson stayed silent as the elevator continued towards the 3rd basement level, the weapons testing facility.

"Yes H.J.? or should I call you Master?"

"Sir would be fine, now what can you tell me about the Teretti Family?"

As their boss left with the butler named Jameson, Renato, Toto, and Bruno relaxed on the couches and chairs around H.J., all of them nursing light wounds or bruises they had suffered while running through several blockades on the Arno leaving Florence. H.J. was new to this entire world of mafia families, all he knew was that he was a Mist Guardian for the Stella Polare family, and that Takashi was his Boss. He was ready to immerse himself in the work of a mafioso, his life had been changed the day he met Oyaji, the previous Mist Guardian and he learned the unique art of illusions from him; he had simply accepted the part he was put into last night in Florence because it was already his.

"The Stella Polare and the Teretii have been enemies since the 1st Generation, both of them were wealthy landowners in Northern Italy, and frequently their desire for power caused them to fight. We've fought each other every generation, each battle usually ends with an extreme loss of life. This attack in Florence was really no different" Going to the kitchen, Bruno retrieved a bottle of vodka, hopefully, it would be able to soothe the nerves of each of the weary members of the Stella Polare. They toasted for the dead, and the continued success of the living. After downing his shot, H.J. continued with what he was asking.

"Then why was this attack so unexpected?"

"It was the Dying Will Flames, it appears as though they found a way to manifest them without any sort of time limit like our Dying Will Pills. Their flame based weapons made it difficult to counterattack with simple guns"

"Then we need to find a way to level the playing field right? This is a weapon's testing facility, lets go make a new weapon"

"As far as we know, the 13th Boss and his Guardians are dead"

Confirming his suspicions, Takashi felt the sense of fear and dread hit him as he began to lose feeling in his extremities, he stood in place, hoping that his body would not give out on him as he tried to make sense of the situation. He had grown up under the watchful eye of the 13th Generation Guardians, and the closest thing he had to a father was the 13th Boss, for him to die meant that his entire life had changed in the span of a single night. He calmed himself down, taking several deep breaths as he fought against showing the sadness on his face, Jameson gave him a few moments to pull himself together before they exited the elevator.

"What else did they discuss in the meeting?"

"We learned that aside from the base in Japan and Germany, we are the only standing hideout in Tuscany. Even the Sala di Cieli feel earlier in the night, most of the executive staff has been either killed or captured..."

Avoiding the obvious question still lingering in the cold air, they continued onto the 3rd basement, the entire floor being little more than a long corridor flanked at each side by several room, each on a different laboratory where studies were conducted. At the very end of the hallway was a single large door, reinforced with steel and other harder metals to keep the door from being broken into.

"Z.'s been down here since midnight, he didnt want to tell me what he was doing, but i'll let us in"

Tapping away at the small data screen on the side, Jameson enter the code and allowed the two of them into the weapons testing facility

"What can you tell me about Dying Will Flames?"

"It can be considered the same thing as fighting spirit, or killing intent. Its the use of a spiritual energy that can give of heat like a flame. It usually only manifested when people were about to die, so they named them Dying WIll Flames. They come in 7 different types, each one symbolic of the 7 Guardians"

"So I have a Mist Flame because Im a Mist Guardian?"

"Yes, they say that Mist Flames have the ability to turn illusionist's spells into reality; Oyaji was able to make objects appear from no where"

Continuing the conversation for awhile about the different types of Dying WIll Flames, the soldiers that remained in the main hall had let the fatigue of the night before catch up to them, one by one they had begun to fall asleep. The exhaustion of the previous night had taken its toll, and he slept, the only thing H.J. could think about was how he could make himself as strong as Oyaji. For several months he had pushed training to the back of his mind, focusing more on having fun and working on his job. With this new desire to make himself stronger, he felt his need to become a stronger illusionist grow within him.

Answering a call on his communicator, Jameson took the call as he let Takashi into the weapons testing facility, he appeared to be talking to someone within the hideout because communicators rarely worked underground if it was an outside call. Just as quickly as he answered it, Jameson ended the call.

"This room is built with the resilience of my Lightning Flames, the steel on the walls can be hit with a grenade without so much as a scratch"

The weapons testing facility was little more than a plain room with nothing more in it than what was brought in, the standard white-washed walls were checkered with heavy panels of steel that added more to the garish design of the walls. With the power of Jameson's Lightning Flames, he had hardened the room enough to survive powerful attacks and strikes, perfect for a room that was frequently used to test explosive power and destructive capability. The room itself was the size of half a football field, enough room to fit at least 20 cars against each other in either direction.

"Z. said that he was almost finished with something big, so in the meantime, I was thinking that we could have a simple sparring match"

Jameson cracked his hands as he took off the overcoat of his tuxedo and began to relax his muscles, though he appeared to be a normal butler by day, there was clearly an unexplainable power about him that made him an intimidating opponent. The ring on his finger began to glow a bright sparkly as powerful bolts of lightnings cut the air around him. In his other hand he held an object: a single Dying Will Pill. Tossing it to Takashi, he got into a fighting stance and prepared himself for the initial attack

" I hope you realize that our normal therapy sessions wont be as easy as they were before." During his early days in hitman training, he was frequently trained under Jameson's tutelage; while the man appeared to be little more than a butler, he taught Takashi about combat skills and how to fight, usually while allowing Takashi's pent up aggression and sadness out as they fought. They referred to it as "therapy", which quite often ended with Takashi to tired to continue the fight.

"Its okay, I figured you'd have a lot of stress to deal with"

As Takashi and Jameson readied their fighting stances, the harsh sound of metal grating against metal echoed. The reinforced door sliding open. The interior lock having been lifted, the doors slid open and the figure known as "Z" stepping out. A wooden box carried beneath one arm. A heavy cane supporting her/him in the other. The stiff short figure limped out of the doors, walking directly towards Takashi. Wheezing, it began to speak "The old generation is dead *wheeze*."

Shifting his/her arms she/he opened the box and withdrew a small ring. It was simple looking. Little more than a plain band of colorless metal. Three symbols however were engraved into the band. The first was that of the Polare family. A symbol long since engraved on his heart. The second, was a number 13 , crossed, slashed out. The most unlucky of numbers destroyed, the only thing left, the next number after. And the third symbol, an empty blank circle. Open to interpretation and free from restrictions.

"This...is an immitation. Z wheezed "An imperfect parody of the true ring. But...with this...your family may yet live...Wear the ring....And take your place as the lucky fourteenth leader." Closing his box, Z continued to walk as if nothing had happened. Moving slowly to the elevator and the lobby. These children were fortunate people...they lived now as the generation after the least fortunate one in the history of the Stella Polare family. Perhaps, with fate no longer against them...their achievements would not dissappear.

But now was not the time for sentimental thoughts...now...there were more children who needed his arms...more whose fate would soon rest upon the weapons of this new era. The dying will flames.

"To think you would be so rude as to besmirch the name of the 13th Boss!"

From the moment he had began his training a decade before as a hitman, Takashi knew their was something he did not like about Z. It was not just his ambiguity and his inability to involve himself in the matters of the family, it was his lack of discipline. He was unable to find any way to express himself other than through criticism and tactless insults. Typically it was to point out some managerial error, or a fault in the maintenance in many of the bases, but to be so insolent as to mock the very name of the 13th Boss and his entire Generation was an insult that he could not stand.

Drawing his sword, he felt his every passion was emboldened by the supplement he had taken only moments before. Blinded by his only resolution, to make Z. pay for attacking such a sore subject, throwing it in the face of the person most hurt by the fact that the only thing he knew as a family was murdered all at once in one night, he prepared himself to attack. Using his favored Sanzu Road Step, he poured all of the strength given to him by his Dying Will and released it, all at once. A single strike faster than anything a normal human could see, he put no effort into showing mercy in his attack.

The powerful iaido technique was strong enough to decapitate Z where he stood, and with Takashi having no sympathy for the weapon's developer, it had come as a shock that in the midst of his attack, he was met with a literal wall of resistance, almost impossible for him to see, his blade was completely defeated in the midst of its attack as a barrier of electromagnetic energy barred his attack. The subtle use of Lightning Flames made it clear that Jameson had already made the first move long before Takashi lost his conscience.

"Hold on now Squirt, you already chose to fight me, ill go next"

Concentrating a packet of Lightning Flames around his ringed right hand, he turned a simply right punch into a wrecking ball aimed directly at Takashi's face, with nothing to defend himself with, he threw his arms up and hoped for the best.

Finding himself awaken on the couch around noon-time, he felt the 6 hour nap was more than enough time for him to come to terms with the sudden upheaval in his life. He had a new resolution for himself, to master the strange art of illusion that was given to him. He had no idea of how he would be able make himself any better than the few pointers that he had been given by his master. He had been made blatantly aware of how large the gap was between his master, able to turn his own spells into reality with ease, while H.J, could barely manage an average clone or a subtle enough replication of an appearance. Remembering back to his brief period of training, he had taken a few particular words of wisdom and kept them with him.

"The art of illusion is the ability to rob those around you of their sense of reality, and bring your own imagination into battle"

Pulling himself up from the couch, he had looked outside at the shining afternoon sun and realized that their were more options at his disposal than simply making an obvious fake and partial illusion. If he could truly control the minds of others, than it would simply require the knowledge of psychology to properly shift the illusion to fit the ambiguous parts of the human psyche and bring them about. If he could make his enemies believe for even a second that what he conjured up could be real, than the goal of the illusion was already reached, he could control their minds, hearts and fight back, all without losing the advantage. His skill at perception and observation had made him an ideal illusionist.

"I can confuse the mind with multiple versions of myself, and take the guise of others, but to hide my own presence, I can add a whole new dimension to the confusion"

It was a simple enough idea, and an easy application of his powers, he would simply reinforce the idea that he was not really there, and in less than a second, he could feel his presence in the room slowly fading away, it was if the air around him became cooler, and the room less dense.

Z did not look back at the angry child who sought to strike her/him. Continuing his/her ride up the elevator, she/he walked out onto the ground floor and proceeded towards the lounge in the back. From his/her point of view there were only four other "Guardians" in the house. Slowly, he/she set the box on the small glass coffee table surrounded by the ring of ez-chairs and couches. Clicked the lock, opened it, and sat back.

Goodness this was an uncomfortable seat. It was like he/she was sitting on a child or something. Trying as best she/he could to get comfortable, he/she began speaking "Your new weapons...guardians" gesturing to the box still containing six rings. Each one emblazoned with the scrawled off number thirteen, the family's crest and a styalized looking piece of meteorology.

"These are immitations of the weapons carried by each generation of the Polare family...and they are the kindred rivals of the weapons used by the Terretti in this latest conflict. That so many have risen who may use the dying will flames freely is...surprising. But flame must be fought with flame...and these rings match the arms of the terretti....for the moment"

Taking a the full strength of the Lightning-enhanced fist to his face, Takashi was thrown clear across the room, his body aching from the strength of the attack, his jaw was bruised, but he was no worse for wear. Thanks to the power of the Dying Will Pill, his high endurance had excelled to monstrous levels, allowing him to take Jameson's attack without much more than a few scrapes. His powerful resolution flickering out without the anger to power it, he returned to his ordinary state. His sword, on the other hand, was not nearly as lucky, shredded nearly to pieces by the electromagnetic barrier produced from Jameson's ring.

"My sword.... Ive had that one for years..."

His cane-sword, originally a gift from the 13th Boss, was a perfectly ordinary sword, so sharp it could cut steel, but it held more sentimental value to him; it was the only weapon he used during his time as a hitman, bestowed on him by the boss, he relied on the sword in the dozens of fights, confrontations and ambushes that occurred on the job and he had never once doubted his strength with the shikomizue.

"Well its good that your sword broke, cause now you can use this.."

Leaving the weapon's testing room, Jameson returned a few minutes later with an object in his hand, a long slender cane, the top of it appeared to be be engraved with several ornate symbols along the handle. It was a new cane sword. Tossing it to Takashi, he drew the blade and the spirit of the blade spoke to him, cutting arcs in the air with it, it seemed as if it was almost exactly like his previous blade, except their was something much ore unique to it.

"It's the Mono-hoshizao, it was a gift given to you by the 13th Boss, armed with an Ingenium/Steel alloy, it is a much more resilient, lightweight blade, capable of being lit with Dying Will Flames" Jameson pointed to the rings Z. had left on the table "These rings will put you on the road to the 14th Boss, use them wisely Takashi"

Taking the new burden along with his blade, he placed the ring on his left hand, while holding his new sword in his right, deeply inhaling, he mustered the courage to make an order "Order all executives to return to the bases, we'll need a more accurate measure of our current fighting strength, once there, have the strongest captains meet us here; I am taking H.J., Bruno and Renato with me to Japan, where the other 4 Guardians are waiting for us."

Turning to Z., he kept his composure as he stared at the androgynous person sitting before him " Ill need you to make weapons for our family, ill front the costs, but these Ingenium weapons are a good place to start"

"It's more expensive than you realize" Z retorted. "Ingenium cannot be purchased through traditional suppliers." Shifting further uncomfortably in his/her seat unable to detect the now invisible H.J she/he was sitting on. "It is a rare quasi synthetic mineral. Forming it is a task which requires weeks of effort. *wheeze* Mass production is virtually impossible."

At last abandoning the uncomfortable couch and the unsoft lap of H.J., Z hopped up. Hobbling on his/her cane towards the window, she/he continued to speak "What is more. The supply of ingenium you still possess, is barely enough to smelt a jacket of bullets...but...there is another way."

Stopping at the window Z turned "Your old refineries have been damaged beyond repair, this I am almost certain of. But...there have been...rumors. Rumors that the Polare family created a storehouse for this day. Should their family ever face extinction, they are rumored to have stockpiled a series of prototypes and equipment for restarting the organization. Among these prototypes, would be a suitable ingenium synthesizer." Z began a coughing fit, doubling over for a moment before bringing him/herself upright once more.

"The location of this storehouse, has never been confirmed...Unless of course...someone from the previous generation had knowledge of such a storehouse...I'm certain that it would be a welcome asset" Z looked expectantly at Jameson. If there was anyone who might have been entrusted with the last generations secrets it would have been him. Whether he waited to reveal them in "do time" or allow them to go on the offensive right away was another matter.

Testing his latest ability, he sneaked into the third basement level of the hideout with every bit of his concentration put into controlling his presence to keep himself as clandestine as possible. He had fully worked out the strengths and weaknesses of his ability, but the idea of using his illusion to get the drop on his allies was a safe alternative to teach himself then for him to fail in combat. He gave himself a brief moment to relax as he entered the elevator, waiting for it to take him to the weapons testing facility Takashi and the butler had been looking for hours earlier.

The door pinged as it arrived at the last level of the basement opened up into a long hallway, while each of the rooms were locked, it appeared as though they were where the Stella Polare had crafted all sorts of different weapons. At the far end of the room were two large open doors, where it appeared that several people were already in the middle of discussion. A brief second of listening he could hear the sound of Takashi's voice coming from the room, and with it, came the test of his skill.

Focusing on removing his presence, he pushed his abilities as he felt himself disappear from the room more and more. He took a step forwards, and was so silent he could not hear his own footsteps anymore. Moving as cautiously as possible, he was able to remove almost every trace of himself as he entered into the room. Taking a quiet seat in the room, he eavesdropped on the conversation. Moving himself away from the strange androgynous person? that was coming closer to him, he moved towards the door before he was stopped by the Butler. Jameson reached out, and with speed several times faster than what was possible, he was able to grab onto H.J. and freak him out enough to lose control of the illusion.

"Nice try kid, but even our average illusionists can do better than that."

"Really? how do they do that?"

Smiling to himself, he asked H.J. to follow him into the next room "Here's a little something we tend to use on newbie illusionists"

"We dont have much of a force to deploy at the moment, but the need for Guardians and the Ingenium resource in japan is too high; We'll deploy our current forces, then, which would be the 7 of us. But since you cant fight, and H.J. is still not combat ready, that brings us to about 5 active fighters"

Apprehensive at the thought of leaving themselves wide open in Japan, they would need to find the other Guardians before the Teretti had found them, much like what they did in Florence with H.J. The Teretti were not know to have a base in Japan, but with the sudden attacks on several key Stella Polare operations, it was clear that Japan was next on both the families lists. They would need to reorganize themselves quickly, otherwise they would lose any chance of retaking the resources left for them in Japan. Gripping his Mono-hoshizao, he had a feeling that time was running out.

"I guess I really am the 14th Boss now..."

Of the dozens of things he wanted to say in that moment, he chose to ignore them, better than to waste the breath on a person he was sure was a robot. Leaving the weapons testing room, he exited the large steel doors and went to go find where Jameson had taken H.J. while at the same time trying to call Bruno on his communicator. With them several hundred feet underground, the communicators signal was spotty, but he had managed to wake him from his slumber and order him to prepare a private jet for as soon as possible.

Moving across the hallway, Jameson and H.J. had stopped at one of the many similar doors that flanked the sides of the single stretch of the third basement. Opening the door with his Lightning Flames, he inserted his ring into a small slot designated on the door, and in just a few moments, the door's lock had been opened, allowing access into the room. The room was little more than a storage area, holding various types of books, papers and other similar material. H.J. assumed that it was some sort of record room, stored safely underground so that no one other than the designated people could look at them. Jameson approached an old bookshelf in the far corner and pulled a single tome from the top shelf. Blowing off the dust, he handed it to H.J.

"Here we are, This is a book written by the 8th Generation Mist Guardian, detailing the skills and secrets one needs in order to strengthen their skill with illusions, if you can complete the book, you should be at the level of a high-class illusionist, like Oyaji was"

The book's rough leather binding appeared to be very loose and degraded, the pages as well as the words had already begun to fade an crinkle under the decades it had spent in use, but from the book H.J. could feel a certain presence, like the book was calling out to him. It sparked a sudden interest in him, he began to open the pages but found that a lot of the words were almost impossible to see, even under the artificial light of the storeroom.

"Why is the text so difficult to read, is there a specific reason?"

"Oyaji said that was apart of learning from the book, so I cant give you any hints"

Grabbing a large set of scrolls from the wall, Jameson and H.J. were about to return to the weapon's testing facility when they were stopped by Takashi, who appeared to come after them.

"Are those the secret techniques?"

Meeting this two subordinates in the record room hidden deep within the bowels of the Tuscano Vecchio, he had figured out about half way through that Jameson was doing more than simply giving a book to H.J. Also hidden within the record room were dozens of mysterious techniques and skills that were perfected and master by Guardians of generations passed. Bestowing the archive on the guardian of the Tuscano Vecchio, the Stella Polare had an entire written account of their history since the time of the Primo Generation all the way back in the 1850's. In there, a certain set of skills were what Takashi was looking for, and now that he was the 14th Boss, he was eligible to use the styles of combat that were retained in the shelves.

"These were a unique set of techniques created by the 1st Rain Guardian, and was used again by the 13th, the absolute style of swordsmanship. Your Sanzu Road Step is a good technique, but it has too few weaknesses."

Jameson handed him a set of several ancient scrolls, nearly 200 years old, that were so delicate they looked like they would explode into dust if he had exhaled too hard. He had learned about the Shingon Mikkyo Butsu-ryu from the 13th Rain Guardian, and old man with an even older demeanor to match. He was an old man before he hit the age of 40, but while Takashi underestimate the man as simple and a grumpy, his real nature showed when in combat. A master of that most fated style of swordsmanship, he fought like a hurricane and with his unique style of swordsmanship, he had no enemies. It was the skill of the 13th Generation's Guardians, the 13th Boss included, that made Takashi so complacent about their defeat.

"I based that technique off of a special form of the Shingon Mikkyo, but the real thing is nothing compared to the imitation, Ill start working as soon as I can"
